Arts and crafts of all types were a treasured part of my upbringing. While I trained and created a successful career as a financial manager, I continued to work at creating beautiful and functional items – including taking classes with well-known creators to improve my skills and knowledge. Once I discovered jewelry made of chainmaille, I immediately fell in love with the look of it, the feel of it, and with the making of it. When making chainmaille and hand-knotted pearls I love to see the small jump rings, pearls and silk cord become sleek, elegant jewelry. Chainmaille and pearls share a rough or natural beginning. Chainmaille was first created to make bulky armor to protect warriors’ bodies from swords and pearls grew naturally in the sea inside mollusks from a piece of grit. Neither of these beginnings were expected to turn into sleek, elegant jewelry but it is quite fun to help them make that transformation. I have found that the precision, detail, and patience needed as a financial manager are also important skills in fabricating jewelry, particularly creating sleek, gorgeous chainmaille and hand-knotted pearl necklaces. Making jewelry has been a joy for me for a long time now. I hope that wearing it gives much joy as well.
